Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Who writes about how to love yourself? Does it sound like a self-fulfilling prophecy? Who does she think she is?

This is exactly what I would have thought several years ago—before I embarked on my own journey of self-love. I reached a point in my life where I knew something needed to change. I wasn’t happy with where I was, and while I didn’t have many answers, I had countless questions.

One of the biggest self-love moments in my life was quitting a job that I once believed was the pinnacle of my career—a role I thought would elevate me to new heights. I was wrong on so many levels. That decision catapulted me into a soul-level journey that has shaped me ever since.

At the time, I believed self-love meant indulging in massages, catching up on sleep, and feeling refreshed. While those things played a role, I soon realized self-love encompassed so much more. It helped me get back on track, guiding me toward a life I was truly meant to live. It brought me closer to my purpose and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Lately, self-love and self-care have become buzzwords in the personal development space. And while trends can sometimes feel superficial, this is one movement worth embracing—not just for ourselves but for future generations.

What is Self-Love?

If I had to define self-love, I would say it is the act of embracing and accepting all parts of yourself—the ones you cherish and the ones you struggle with.

  • It is choosing joy and prioritizing what makes you feel abundant and prosperous.
  • It is maintaining practices that keep you grounded, safe, and aligned.
  • It is silencing your inner critic and amplifying the voice of self-compassion.
  • It is having the courage to care for yourself, even when no one else does.
  • It is owning up to past mistakes and finding the strength to grow from them.
  • It is offering and receiving forgiveness.
  • It is confidently saying, “I love who I am.”

My Journey of Self-Love

Self-love begins wherever you are. If you’re reading this, you’ve already taken an important first step. Even if you don’t think you’ve started, the mere curiosity about self-love means you’re on the path to discovering it.

When I started my journey, I began journaling and blogging to clear the noise in my head. Writing gave me clarity—it helped me distinguish between what was true, what was fear-based, what was resentment, and what was genuine desire.

I immersed myself in mindfulness and meditation. I attended live events and retreats, connected with women seeking their voices, and interviewed mothers who balanced self-care with entrepreneurship and parenthood.

I delved into energy work, learning Reiki, Tarot, Oracle readings, and Akashic Records. I explored neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to reframe limiting beliefs. Mirror work transformed how I viewed myself.

Today, I practice Reiki daily for myself and my family. I journal consistently. Mindfulness has been a game-changer, and sound healing—especially with crystal and Tibetan singing bowls—has become a deep passion of mine.

Self-love has helped me embrace my whole self—the parts of me that I once wondered if anyone else could love. It has allowed me to move past feelings of brokenness from past surgeries and decisions that defied traditional career paths.

For me, self-love isn’t a destination—it’s a sacred daily practice.

How to Begin Your Self-Love Journey

If you’re ready to embark on your self-love journey, here are some practices to start with:

1. Cultivate Mindfulness

Awareness is key. When you recognize your emotions, your needs, and your inner critic, you can begin to replace self-judgment with self-compassion.

2. Start Journaling

Journaling helps clear mental clutter and bring your thoughts into focus. You can write freely or use guided prompts. A great resource is You Woke Up Worthy by Britny West, a 21-day journal designed to help you feel deserving of your desires and dreams.

3. Practice Mirror Work

We’re not always comfortable with our reflection. Mirror work fosters self-acceptance by helping you see and appreciate your inner beauty.

4. Build Meaningful Friendships

Surround yourself with people who value personal growth and contribute positively to your life.

5. Use Affirmations

Positive statements can shift your mindset. I once shared affirmation cards with a colleague whenever she felt irritated—it became a small yet powerful ritual. Hay House offers great affirmation card decks on Amazon.

6. Connect with Nature

Step outside. Walk, run, swim, hike, or cycle—nature has a profound way of grounding us.

7. Explore Healing Modalities

Try yoga, sound healing, music classes, or creative arts like painting. Rise Above by Whitney Freya is an excellent book on self-expression through painting—no artistic experience required!

8. Take Small Steps & Keep Going

Begin where you are. Self-love isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Release self-doubt, invite self-awareness, and extend yourself grace.

I won’t promise the journey will always be easy. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. But I can promise this: as you cultivate self-love, your life will feel more meaningful, more aligned, and more worth living.
